Social & Environmental Responsibility

Bodhi Surf + Yoga is built on an ethos of social and environmental responsibility, an aspiration that our business can be the tool with which we forge a better world for ourselves, for each other, and for future generations. We are changemakers in the world, and take actions that are in line with our “true north” to make a positive difference.

Our mission statement is: Educating, inspiring, and empowering our stakeholders to live more sustainably through surfing, yoga, nature immersion, and community engagement.

We are formally committed to donate the equivalent of 2% of revenue or more to charitable partners each year (including in-kind product donations). Our Corporate Responsibility measures are the tools with which we make progress on this journey. We always endeavor to be transparent with this process, and release annual reports which highligh each year’s initiatives! While we are very proud of the work we have accomplished, we are by no means finished. In 2016, we joined the ranks as a B Corporation, and look forward to our business being held accountable to a rigorous set of standards by a global, third party nonprofit. Community Programs

Bodhi Surf + Yoga has either designed or co-developed a number of community programs that aim to preserve or improve the place we call home. Some of our areas of impact are providing educational opportunities, improving the environment, and uniting community members. A few examples have included our Service & Surf Saturdays, Yoga for the Community, and Bahia Ballena Libre de Plástico (Bahia Ballena Plastic-Free Initiative).

Community Investment

At Bodhi Surf + Yoga, we like to be active and invest in our community because as individuals we love our home and as a business we depend on its well-being; moreover, we know that a community that is well cared for is a community that thrives. There are many ways that we invest back into our community, some of the most notable initiatives include our Travelers' Philanthropy Program and the donation of personal time, energy, and resources in a number of community groups that promote sustainable development and community wellbeing.

Environmental Awareness

We believe that we have a unique opportunity to not just provide our guests with the opportunity to have powerful experiences in a beautiful, protected natural area, but to utilize those moments as a catalyst to create long-term behavioral change. We have found a way to utilize what we do - hosting surf and yoga camps - as a vehicle to spread environmental awareness. Some of the ways we do that are through our surf and yoga curricula and our Ocean Guardian Pledge and Digest.

Impact Reduction

It's one thing to talk the talk, and another to walk the walk. At Bodhi Surf + Yoga, we believe that reducing our individual and company footprint is important, both for the act itself and to be positive role models for other people and businesses alike. This is a category in which we can still improve a great deal, but this challenge serves as motivation. We reduce our environmental impact by having solar panels, a rainwater collector, onsite compost and recycling, limiting our use of plastics, and using biodegradable cleaning products to name a few.

Global Donations

As members of a global community, Bodhi Surf + Yoga sees the need to contribute on a global level. Throughout the years, we have donated to different groups, organizations, or movements whose values are aligned with our own. Some of the causes that are important to us are responsible travel, marine conservation, and plastic reduction, and some of the organizations we've donated to over the years include the Center for Responsible Travel (CREST), B Lab, 1% for the Planet, Surfrider, 5 Gyres, and Plastic Pollution Coalition.

Responsible Travel

The travel industry is very influential, but hasn't historically been the greatest for local culture, society, or the environment. We have learned that "with great power comes great responsibility" - this is why we believe in a travel industry model that doesn't blindly seek profit, but considers people and planet as well. Some of the ways we do that are by attending responsible tourism conferences and staying educated in our industry, working with other local responsible travel providers, promoting guest interaction with the community, and putting investments back into our community.
