SMALL-GROUP SURF & YOGA RETREATS IN UVITA, COSTA RICA
For over a decade, our "Small is Beautiful" philosophy has been our guiding star. We aren't a mass-market resort; we are a purpose-driven pura vida home that welcomes a maximum of just 10 guests per week.
By trading the crowds for connection, we ensure your time in the water and on the mat is unhurried, safe, and deeply personal. Here, where the jungle meets the sea, the most meaningful moments happen quietly. Whether you are looking for a joyful week of catching waves, discovering a new passion, or a profound internal shift—the experience is entirely yours to discover. Bodhi is your place to awaken purpose.

Why We Don’t Sell "Transformation"
In the modern wellness world, everyone promises "transformation." We don't. The moment you guarantee a specific, profound outcome, you turn a deeply human experience into a packaged product. Bodhi isn’t a machine you put intentions into and get guaranteed results back out. Instead, we simply provide an environment that invites you to slow down, move your body, connect with others, and pay attention.
The Bodhi Way
We create the conditions for your journey through four core pillars:
Surfing
The Ocean as a Mirror
Inside the protected waters of Marino Ballena National Park, the whitewash demands your presence, helping you trade anxiety for the rhythm of the tides.
Yoga
The Mat as a Sanctuary
Practiced in our open-air jungle shala. It’s about quieting the noise so you can build the clarity to take that peace off the mat and back home.
Nature Immersion
The Earth as an Anchor
Reconnecting with a place that holds nearly 5% of the world's biodiversity. Spotting scarlet macaws or hearing howler monkeys puts everything back into perspective.
Community Connection
A Return to Belonging
Our eco-lodge is woven into the fabric of Uvita. You’ll experience authentic Tico culture and feel more like a welcomed neighbor than a passing tourist.
The Bodhi Experience, In Their Words
EXCELLENT Based on 271 reviews Posted on Hauke BlankenTrustindex verifies that the original source of the review is Google. Bodhi is a really really special place. The feeling of complete relaxation, deep caring, and integration into an amazing community is something that I’m not sure is replicated anywhere else. I can’t recommend it enough to anyone looking for a complete disconnect from the daily work grind, and the surf and yoga instruction is excellent. Surfing at Playa Chamán will definitely improve your paddling, and the waves I caught are burned into my memory. After a week I left feeling relaxed and rejuvenated to a degree that I didn’t even know was possible, and am very much looking forward to my next visit to Bodhi and Uvita :) Update April 2026: I just returned home from my second visit to Bodhi, and the experience was just as good, if not better than, my first visit. It is abundantly clear that everyone on the team cares deeply about providing a great experience for the guests, and I truly appreciate all of the support and lessons. Both times I’ve visited I feel like I left a better surfer and human being, with new friends and a deepened appreciation for the amazing community of Uvita. And again, I’m very much looking forward to my next visit :)Posted on Nancy SquiresTrustindex verifies that the original source of the review is Google. Quelle belle expérience! Bodhi c'est le spot parfait où poser ta valise pour du bon surf & yoga au Costa Rica! Toute l'équipe est fantastique. Je recommende ce lieu exceptionnel à tous ❤️Posted on Liddell ShannonTrustindex verifies that the original source of the review is Google. We had 2 amazing surf lessons!!! Everyone in our beginner group had success. Great guides!Posted on Lizzie TurnerTrustindex verifies that the original source of the review is Google. I had a fantastic week at Bodhi and I really recommend the experience for solo travellers. The rooms are lovely and very comfortable. There is no A/C but this is not a problem because it stays cool at night with a ceiling fan and a standing fan. The food was excellent and plentiful. The yoga teaching (with Greta) was a perfect combination of relaxing/restorative but also helpfully targeted to assist our surfing. The yoga space is very peaceful and spacious. The surfing was absolutely excellent. As a beginner, I felt a little apprehensive about what to expect but Dennis (our teacher) made any concerns I had disappear. He is a really gifted teacher and a lovely guy. All of the Bodhi team are so kind and welcoming. Shout out to George who was so friendly and helpful. My week at Bodhi left me feeling extremely relaxed.Posted on Cristina Castillo-NelsonTrustindex verifies that the original source of the review is Google. We loved Bodhi so much last year that we had to come back for a second time! And we're so glad we did! As a busy physician-mom of three who loves yoga and surfing, my husband and I were looking for a family surf + yoga experience that mindfully cultivated interconnection with the environment and ourselves, and at Bodhi we have found that and so much more. What has made Bodhi so extra special for us is the level of care, kindness, generosity, and joy of the entire team. I never would have guessed that my oldest daughter (12) would build the interest and confidence over her second week to paddle out to the Green/Blue waves with James to surf with my husband and me (and have the grit to come back for more even after several wipe outs!), or that our amazing yoga instructor, Pilar, would would send us additional yoga resources even after our trip to continue our yoga learning, or that James would take a whole hour to give us a phenomenal tour of the Coral Restoration Lab, which has inspired a great love of marine biology from our kids. We loved having coffee with George each morning, appreciated the delicious and beautiful meals made by Lucy. I really appreciated the knowledgeable and holistic surf teachings from Travis, James, and Denis! I also really appreciated the ease of having our children there to share the experience, especially the flexibility for our almost 6 year old and 9 year old to swim, boogie board, body surf or surf during their lessons. We also loved the other like-minded family and college girls we were with for the week, and we enjoyed many fun and thought provoking conversations! The food was deliciously fresh, and the lodge was beautiful and tranquil. Travis, Pilar, and team have created a true gift for all guests. We are still smiling from all the memories, and we can’t wait to plan our next trip back!Posted on Serena PeckTrustindex verifies that the original source of the review is Google. Bodhi Surf and Yoga… what can I say other than life changing? Every single moment of this trip was incredible. The small group size is perfect. I met amazing people and we became a little family. I honestly wish I could’ve stayed for a month and gotten to know the staff even more, that’s how special it is. George, what a guy! Incredible manager, hilarious, and such a kind soul. Greta and Pillar, amazing yoga teachers and the best classes I’ve ever had. Dennis… I’m speechless. I’ve never had a surf lesson come close to the way you explained everything so clearly. You worked so hard to make sure we had the best experience in the water, and we did! Luci, the most delicious food I’ve ever had. WOW. Travis, incredible guy. I wish I got to chat with you more! Also, the company itself is so intentional. You can feel how connected they are to the Uvita community. It never felt like being at a resort separated from the people who call the place home. It felt woven into the fabric of the community, and you can see that in every interaction. Everything just felt so genuine. I didn’t take as many photos as I usually do on vacation, because I was so immersed in the atmosphere it honestly felt like home! I did not want the week to end. This was everything I hoped it would be and more. It’s been 3 months and I’m still beaming. I will be back, it’s just a matter of when. Thank you Bodhi Surf & Yoga family <3Posted on Jon SchwartzTrustindex verifies that the original source of the review is Google. I just got back from a trip with my family to Bodhi Surf + Yoga, and I absolutely felt like it was a 5-star experience. The accommodations were clean and comfortable, the property was well-kept and beautiful, and the food was out of this world. But beyond that, it was the people who really stood out to me. Travis has hired a great group of folks to take care of guests. In particular, I wanted to shout out George, who took great care of us while we were on the grounds at Bodhi, and Dennis and the team of surf instructors, who took great care of us when we were on the water. Related, I should say that I made the trip with my wife and three kids --- none of whom really had any surf experience to speak of. All of us learned a ton about surfing while also having a ton of fun, and are eager to go on more surf adventures in the future. I also wanted to shout out Travis for his dedication to the concept of "business as a force for good". I really appreciate his commitment to running Bodhi as a certified B-Corp and all of the extra work that comes with adhering to these principles. To summarize, if you are looking for a truly memorable family vacation, I can't recommend Bodhi Surf & Yoga highly enough!!!Posted on marta dubisTrustindex verifies that the original source of the review is Google. So I don’t know where to start it was so amazing. Greta is wonderful teacher and amazing girl with a lot of passion. With the help of her wonderful tips I could catch the wave at first attempt. I recommend everyone to ask for Greta 😊🌞 Pura Vida!Posted on Carolyn EstesTrustindex verifies that the original source of the review is Google. Our family of 5 from the USA (boys ages 13, 11 & 8) had THE BEST TIME learning to surf from Dennis & Sierra with Bodhi Surf + Yoga! We did the 2-day AM surf clinic, and it was just perfect for beginners. The beach was beautiful / not crowded at all, and the training was outstanding. We always felt safe with the staff who are clearly very passionate and knowledgeable about surfing. We would highly recommend this experience to anyone visiting Costa Rica!!Posted on Bobby BurchardTrustindex verifies that the original source of the review is Google. Dennis and Sierra were wonderful instructors. Their knowledge and tips were invaluable! I felt extremely comfortable with both of them as this was my first time surfing. I would recommend this to anyone visiting Uvita.
❤️Posted on Steve PVerified A magical week at Bodhi Surf & Yoga Bodhi Surf + Yoga was an unforgettable experience. Set in beautiful Uvita, just a short walk from a stunning, uncrowded beach, it’s perfect for all levels—including body surfers like me. The entire staff are incredibly welcoming, safety‑focused, and genuinely passionate about teaching. The food was healthy and delicious, the accommodations were comfortable, and the yoga was fun, relaxed, and completely non‑judgmental. It felt like a true reset for both body and mind. Loved every minute reconnecting with my daughter. Highly recommend—one week won’t feel like enough.Posted on Hauke BVerified A life changing experience It’s hard to put into words how positive of an experience I’ve had both times I’ve visited Bodhi. There is an incredible energy that feels deeply rooted in community, relaxation, and fantastic surf. What the Bodhi team has built here goes well beyond your normal vacation. Aside from the surf, I’ve always loved how this place is the antithesis of your normal resort experience and every guest is encouraged right from the beginning to explore and take part in the amazing community that is Bahia Ballena. Each time I’ve left Bodhi inspired, refreshed, with new friends, a better surfer, and a better human being. To summarize, if you are looking for a truly memorable family vacation, I can't recommend Bodhi Surf & Yoga highly enough!!!Posted on Albert KVerified Intimate, Intentional, Unforgettable Travis and Pilar have built something genuinely special in Uvita; an intentionally small operation (max 10 guests) where the intimacy isn't a limitation, it's the whole philosophy. The disciplines here aren't just two activities on a schedule. Yoga in the morning with Pilar genuinely prepares your body and mind for the surf adventure that awaits you with Travis. You feel that connection by day two. The open-air yoga shala, surrounded by bamboo and tropical greenery, sets the tone perfectly. It's hard to be anywhere else mentally when your practice literally opens to nature. The grounds themselves are worth mentioning: a lush meditation walking garden, a small plunge pool to recover in after surf sessions, and a communal dining area that naturally pulls the group together. The space was clearly designed with intention, not just convenience. Pilar's attentiveness as an instructor stood out in a personal way. When I arrived on day one with a travel related back injury, she didn't just modify my practice.. she proactively flagged specific poses to skip and arranged a private, gentler session before the main class so I wouldn't miss out entirely. That level of care isn't something you get at scale. It's what founder-run looks like in practice. The small group size naturally creates real connection with fellow guests. I left with people I genuinely want to stay in touch with, the kind of conversations and friendships that just don't happen at larger retreats. Travis and Pilar are a great team. Their complementary styles, his energy in the water, her grounded presence on the mat, give the place its character. You can tell this isn't a business venture dressed up as a passion project. It's the other way around. If you're looking for something intimate, purposeful, and run by people who actually care, this is it.Posted on Darsi PVerified Absolute perfection I booked a last minute trip to Bhodi so I could dedicate an entire week to learning to surf, while also maintaining my yoga practice. It’s a bit of travel time to get there but everything is so well organized by Bhodi that it felt easy. After my first surf lesson with Dennis on Monday, I decided I needed more than a week there and promptly booked another week. It helps offset the travel time and there’s so much to do that the extra weekend in between allowed me to do the coconut tour, which was such an experience, as well as the awesome farmers market, which I got to go to 3 times over my two week stay. The restaurants are plentiful, quaint and authentic; the sunsets on the beach are otherworldly, but what really sold me on Bhodi was the people, of course. I was supposed to be the only guest there during my first week and Travis emailed me to let me know that if I was uncomfortable with that, I could reschedule. I didn’t mind, but they incentivized people from the prior week to stay so that I wouldn’t be alone and I’m so glad they did because I had an amazing time getting to know the other woman who extended her stay. That’s to say—the owners genuinely care about your experience. George was so welcoming and helpful and I never felt like a burden as a guest there. Dennis makes me smile just thinking about his passion for teaching surfing. I always felt safe, supported and inspired with all the instructors —Greta and Alejandro. Lucy whips up fresh delicious, local food for breakfast and lunches. The rooms are cleaned to perfection daily which is so nice because obviously there’s a lot of sand! Before leaving I booked a two week return trip in April—and traveling back to the same place is a rare event for me that speaks to how amazing Bhodi is. Can’t wait to be back!! Thank you for your attention to environmental sustainability, community, and well-being. Much love and gratitude 🙏Posted on Escape15340274751Verified Absolutely Incredible Experience at Bodhi Surf + Yoga My stay at Bodhi Surf + Yoga was genuinely transformative. From the moment I arrived, I felt welcomed, supported, and completely at ease. The team creates an environment that is warm, intentional, and deeply connected to both community and nature. The surf instructor, Dennis & Greta are outstanding — patient, encouraging, and personalized. Whether you’re a total beginner or already have some experience, the coaches meet you exactly where you are and help you build real confidence in the water. The yoga classes with Greta, & Pilar were just as meaningful. Each session was grounding, thoughtful, and beautifully integrated with the natural surroundings. It felt like the perfect balance of movement, mindfulness, and personal growth. The accommodations were comfortable, clean, and designed with care, and the food was fresh, healthy, and delicious. thanks to lovely Lucy ❤. what truly sets Bodhi apart is the heart and intention behind everything they do. The staff, George, genuinely care — about their guests, the ocean, the environment, and the local community. I left feeling renewed, inspired, and more connected to myself and the world around me. I can’t recommend Bodhi Surf + Yoga highly enough. If you’re looking for a meaningful, energizing, and unforgettable experience, this is the place.Posted on Heidi WVerified Surfing in Uvita I had such an incredible time during my surf lesson with Dennis and Gretchen! It was the perfect mix of fun, education, and encouragement. They broke everything down in a way that made it easy to understand, even for a beginner, and created such a positive, supportive atmosphere. I felt challenged but never overwhelmed. By the end of the lesson, I was not only standing up on the board but feeling genuinely confident in the water. Dennis and Gretchen are amazing instructors, and I highly recommend them to anyone who wants to learn in a way that feels both empowering and exciting!Posted on Nataschaa CVerified Grateful I chose BODHI This was my first time booking a retreat rather than organizing my own adventures. And I will definitely be back here.! It was a beautiful balance of scheduled offerings and free time and choice. I discovered that the beauty of being part of a a surf and yoga camp, is that the surf instructions progresses and the yoga classes are so pertinent to the bodies needs for surfing. The team was out of this world. I am a small business owner myself and know the value of an amazing and high quality team, I also know how difficult it is to master the perfect balance of employees. From Dennis, the most incredible, thorough and kind surf instructor, to george who is truly a joy of a human being as the host, to Pilar who is such a grounded and wise yoga teacher, to the whole surf team, office support team and office team, this place shines. Then there is the joy of having a cohort of people to learn with. Again, I am notoriously a person that does not love being part of ‘organized’ groups. And having the small group of 10 to learn with, made the whole adventure so much better. There was so much support and kindness. We also had a child with her family, and this made every thing better. This is a great place for families. I can not say enough good about BODHI. I spent a lot of time researching options, and this choice is unbeatable. Note if you choose BODHI, rent a bike…the beaches are only about a 7 minute bike ride. Also, if you want to enjoy Costa Rica but don’t want the big towns, uvita is amazing!!
